OUR ITINERARY:
Day 1: Monday, October 21
Departure from USA to Bucharest on airline of your choice.
Day 2: Tuesday, October 22: BUCHAREST
Arrival in Bucharest. Welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Bucharest .
Day 3: Wednesday, October 23: BUCHAREST – SINAIA – BRAN – BRASOV
Visit Synagogue in Bucharest. Drive north to Sinaia, Lunch en route. Then to
Transylvania and the mediaeval city of Brasov. Dinner and overnight in Brasov.
Day 4: Thursday, October 24: BRASOV – POIANA BRASOV
Walking tour of Brasov. Visit Council Square, famous Black Church, Synagogue.
Lunch. Then on to Bran Castle, known as Dracula’s Castle. Enjoy a scenic drive to resort,
Poiana Brasov. Dinner in traditional restaurant with folk music. Overnight in Brasov.
Day 5: Friday-Saturday-Tuesday, October 25-28 KLEZKAMP IN SIBIU!
Walking tour of mediaeval Sibiu. Lunch. Our Klezkamp program.begins in the afternoon.
Dinner at the hotel or local restaurant. Overnight in Sibiu.
KLEZKAMP PROGRAM:
Day 6: Saturday, October 26
1:00 p.m. ROUMANIA, ROUMANIA 1920-1953” The great Yiddish singing star Aaron Lebedeff
wrote and recorded his famous song at least three times 1920, 1941 and 1953. We will listen to three versions
and what it reveals about Yiddish, American and Roumanian music and culture recording technology
and Lebedeff’s lifetime of monumental Yiddish musical work.
2: 00 p.m. MAYNE LIBE BESARABIYE: MOLDOVAN YIDDISH VOCAL STYLES IN 4 PORTRAITS
Using film clips and interviews, Benjy-Fox Rosen explores the sound and repertoire of four great
Besarabiyer Yiddish singers: Zelik Berditshever, Moishe Oysher, Efim Chorny and Slava Farber.
3:00 p.m. DANCE CLASS Lee and/or Jim teach Yiddish dances to live music.
EVENING CONCERT /DANCE PARTY
Day 7: Sunday, October 27: Breakfast and lunch at hotel. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Sibiu.
11:00 a.m. ROMANIAN CANTORS 1903-1939: In anticipation of the coming of shabbos
Henry Sapoznik will play and discuss historic recordings of great cantors who were from or recorded
in Romania including Boruch Schorr, Moishe Oysher and J. Sigaiewsky, among other great voices.
1:00 p.m. MAMELIGE, KARNATZLECH UN VAYN: Yiddish Songs featuring Romanian foods.
Benjy-Fox Rosen demonstrates/teaches Yiddish and Roumanian songs about food.
2: 00 p.m. DANCE CLASS Lee and/or Jim teach Yiddish dances to live music.
EVENING CONCERT /DANCE PARTY
Day 8: Monday, October 28: Breakfast and lunch at hotel. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight in Sibiu.
11:00 a.m. HOW KLEZMER WORKS Music staff will offer “show and kvell” playing a diversity of old time
klezmer tunes and highlighting the inner workings of what makes Yiddish music, Yiddish.
1: 00 p.m. MARUMURES SONGS from Max Eiskovits’ fieldwork in Viseu de Sus 1938-39.
BFR will discuss and demonstrate the amazing collection of Yiddish songs collected by folklorist Max Eiskovits
in the final moments before the outbreak of WW2.
2: 00 p.m. DANCE CLASS Lee and/or Jim teach Yiddish dances to live music.
EVENING CONCERT/DANCE PARTY
Day 9: Tuesday, October 29: SIBIU – BISTRITA
Drive to historic Alba Iulia, then north to Turda. Visit the salt mine, one of the world’s top
tourist destinations! Continue to the remote town of Bistrita for dinner and overnight in Bistrita.
Day 10: Wednesday, October 30: BISTRITA – TIHUTA PASS – GURA HUMORULUI – IASI
Drive to Bukovina, land of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visit Voronets monastery
with its unique shade of blue. Lunch en route. Arrive in Iasi. Dinner and overnight in Iasi.
Day 11: Thursday, October 31: IASI
Sightseeing tour of Iasi including Palace of Culture, Synagogue, and Metropolitan Cathedral.
Lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner with folk music. Overnight in Iasi.
Day12: Friday, November 1: IASI – BUCHAREST
Departure from Iasi to Bucharest. Drive across Moldavia region and Romanian Plain.
Lunch en route. Dinner and overnight in Bucharest.
Day 13: Saturday, November 2: BUCHAREST
Half day sightseeing tour of Bucharest. Visit the Palace of Parliament, Ceausescu’s dream,
second largest building in the world, and the Village and Folk Art Museum.
Enjoy lunch on your own. Farewell dinner with traditional folk show. Overnight in Bucharest.
Day 14: Sunday, November 3: BUCHAREST
Farewell to Romania. Drive to the airport for flight home.
